River Classroom Educator/Assistant Canoeing Guide
Join our enthusiastic team of River Classroom® Educator/Canoeing Guides! Nothing is more rewarding than bringing a classroom of students outdoors on a river in canoes to learn! Nashoba Paddler partners with the Nashua River Watershed Association on their River Classroom® programs. We are currently seeking someone who loves working with children, is enthusiastic about outdoor inquiry-based science education, and is an avid paddler.
Position is Part time during May, June, September, and October.
Job Description: River Classroom Educator/Assistant Canoeing Guide
Rental Staff
Join our enthusiastic team of river-lovers and paddlers in our goal of introducing people to the fun and enjoyment of paddling and the beauty of the Nashua River!
RESPONSIBILITIES: Handling customer rentals from start to finish. Includes desk and dock work and various other jobs as needed. Must be friendly, hard-working, organized, and able to lift canoes.
Part time in summer and must also be available for one weekend shift in May, June, September, and October.
Job Responsibilities
- Co-lead programs which utilize canoes to conduct river field studies. Lead inquiry-based discussions and explorations to excite and educate students about the river ecosystem.
- Assist Lead Guide(s) in providing safe and enjoyable canoe trips for students and chaperones as they study and explore the river. Provide paddling assistance and encouragement to participants as needed. Perform rescues and assist with emergencies should they ever occur.
- Run shoreline Aquatic Insect Investigation programs.
- Load and unload canoes and equipment from trailer, set-up for programs, clean and organize boats and equipment at end of day.
Job Requirements
General requirements
- Prior experience working with groups of children, teaching preferred; Science background a plus.
- Canoeing capability is required with the ability to perform efficient forward, reverse, and steering strokes. (Training available); Trip-guiding experience a plus.
- Must possess or obtain the following certifications: CPR and First Aid. (Training provided)
- Able to maintain interest and control of group of students and adult chaperones.
- Must possess time management skills and flexibility in order to run program within time constraints.
- Able to make sound judgments regarding safety both on the shoreline and on the water.
- Able to handle emergencies on the water and shoreline including execution of rescues and re-entries, towing a canoe, and communicating effectively to the other guides and the group.
Physical requirements
- Must possess ability and strength required to load and unload canoes from trailer, carry them to and from launching area, and assist participants getting in and out of canoes.
- Must possess stamina and strength to paddle two consecutive 1-3 hour canoe trips, possibly in difficult paddling conditions such as wind or current, and able to assist participants simultaneously.
- Comfortable being outdoors for duration of the program and work in variable weather conditions.
Additional Lead Guide requirements and responsibilities
- Must effectively give safety and paddling instruction to a group as well as individuals.
- Able to adapt and make quick decisions regarding trip itinerary based on paddling conditions and ability of the group.
- Lead guides must possess American Canoe Association canoe instructor certification or equivalent.
