Groton Greenway River Festival 2005
Please join the Groton Greenway Committee in celebrating its 10th River Festival! The 2005 festival is a free non-commercial event designed to celebrate one of our most important natural resources: The Nashua River.

Please see updated Information on Parking Logistics and Entertainment and an important note about rain!

Parking Logistics and a “Note about Rain”

It takes place on June 19th, rain or shine, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Petapawag Boat Launch on the banks of the Nashua River (at the intersection of Route 119). This year’s event coincides with the town of Groton celebrating its 350th anniversary.

Parking is provided at the Groton-Dunstable Middle School (see link for directions) and a shuttle service has been donated by the Buckingham Bus Company.

A note about rain:  We have a shuttle to the site from the parking area.  The music and exhibits are under tents.  This event is just as fun in the sun as it is under clouds.  Bring an umbrella and wear rain gear if the weather looks like it might rain.

Music and Entertainment

This year’s musical entertainment has been finalized and we are pleased to have the following entertainers.

·        Matt and Shannon Heaton Band - Matt & Shannon are based in Boston, Mass. As a duo they perform traditional and original Irish music on Irish flute, guitar and vocals. They also perform with Siucra (shoo-kruh, means "sugar" in Irish Gaelic.)

·        Stephen Baird - A sidewalk minstrel from Boston with over three decades of performances, Stephen Baird, enchants young and old alike with wonderful stories, poems, jokes, and plenty of songs. His repertoire is seemingly endless, ranging from Irish ditties to ragtime to sing-alongs. With leprechaun charm, he accompanies himself on all manner of instruments; mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, autoharp, kazoo, tambourine, and the fascinating limber jack - a percussion instrument in the form of a wooden puppet toy. His legendary "bag full of surprises" includes elephant, bumble bee and tooth paste costumes to dress up the audience plus life size puppets. Stephen Baird makes a place where people meet and touch each other through art and music.

·        Onkwe Tase and the Grandfather Drum – The Native American who shared Marion Stoddart’s vision in Lynne Cherry’s book, A River Ran Wild, is the essence of our River Festival.  Grandfather Drum will accompany his magnificent stories and music.

We are pleased to have Groton resident and WGBH Radio Host Brad Paul as Master of Ceremonies.

Cardboard Canoe Race

Without a doubt, a perennial favorite!   The rules are simple; given two sheets of cardboard and a roll of duct tape, create a canoe that will make it to the center of the river and back.   Registration takes place throughout the day (supplies are limited) and construction begins at 3:30 PM.  The race takes place at 4:00 PM.  Teams can consist of two people in the boat and with unlimited assistance during construction.   Regardless of whether you participate or not, this is a must-see event!

If you would like to volunteer to help us with this event send mail to Pete Carson (pbcarson@charter.net). Volunteering with this fun group of people is a very rewarding experience!
